Hassiba Rochdi

Hassiba Rochdi, art name of Zohra Bent Ahmed Ben Haj Abdennebi, was a Tunisian singer and actress born on January 10, 1923 (although some sources point to 1915 or 1918) in Djoumime, a town in the central area of Tunisian , and died on September 26, 2012 in La Soukra. She was the first Tunisian actress to play prominent roles in several Egyptian films.

She was born in a family of landowners and spent her childhood at Mateur spending time listening to Bedouin songs and the art of embroidery and tailoring. During this period is strongly influenced by Tunisian Jewish singers beginning to assimilate their style.

During her adolescence, she encounters many difficulties because of a very severe and violent father. She later affirms about her childhood: "I clung to art. It was my religion and my faith. " After another disagreement with her father, she decides to escape home, taking refuge in the city of Bizerte. She is soon found by the family that forcing her to forced marriage. Luckily she avoids this obligation by fleeing again and settling in Sfax City, a major cultural center of the time, where she can find work at a theater troupe where she begins to perform in her singing performances.

In Sfax, she strikes friendship with singer and actress Fethia Khaïri
who urges her to leave her city of adoption to settle in Tunis. Always Fethia Khaïri presents her to Béchir Ressaïs, boss of the Baïdaphone label, who brought her in Paris in 1937 to record her first singles.
The recordings include the composer and musicologist Mohamed Triki, whom Hassiba Rochdi will later marry, who introducing her to the origins of music and singing, and will create an orchestra specially designed for her.

This wedding will allow her to enter the world of music in great style and will allow her to get in touch with the best Tunisian musicians of the time including: Hédi Jouini, Ali Sriti, Kaddour Srarfi and Ali Riahi.

Marriage with Mohamed Triki will end and once divorced Hassiba Rochdi will marry with US diplomat Henry Blake. With him she moves to New York where she will open a restaurant called with her name.

In 1948, following a politically inconvenience involving her husband and an exiled Tunisian, she moved to Cairo where thanks to the encounter with singer Sayyed Chatta, during a party given by King Farouk, she can enter in the circuit of Radio Cairo which reserves a weekly program that will allow the spread of her songs. In Egypt, her career will evolve with cinema's interest. She will play major roles in four major Egyptian productions and it is said that the famous singer Umm Kulthum, jealous of her success, has been working to end her business in Egypt in this field.
After this experience Hassiba Rochdi will return to Tunisia where she will continue her artistic activity in both fields, music and cinema, working for television, theater and cinema.

Her latest film will be released in 1997 by Tunisian director Nouri Bouzid.

Soliman Gamil

Soliman Gamil was an Egyptian musicologist, composer, and qanun player born in Alexandria on 24th December 1924 .
He studied the theory of Arab music and learned to play the qanun at the Institute of Arab Music in Cairo (1941-1945), and classical composition in Paris

In 1963 he began to experiment with the use of Egyptian traditional musical instruments in his compositions for films and theater, in an effort to evoke the sounds of Ancient Egypt , describing his homeland as "the starting point for the evolution of musical civilization".
His soundtracks for theatre and film have won international awards and his compositions are frequently used for radio and television.

Through his work Gamil does something more than interpret Egyptian musical traditions and structures; he creates something new out of them, something pleasant which appeals to both oriental and occidental sensibilities, music with a strange charm and a gentle, lyrical voice.

In addition to the work of musician and composer, he has devoted himself to writing about music for the Al-Ahram newspaper.

Soliman Gamil died   on 13th June 1994 .

Saloua

Fitouma Lemitti known as Saloua's art name is an Algerian singer born in 1941 in Blida, one of the largest cities in Algeria, located 45 kilometers south-west of the Algiers capital.

She began her artistic career in 1952 as animator at Radio Algiers under the direction of Réda Falaki, conducting a program dedicated to children. While the War for Independence in Algeria is in full swing, she decides to move to Paris to work with the French radio station for which she will lead a program aimed at the female audience of the Arab community.

In Paris, in 1960, Saloua became acquainted with Al Missoum (name of the art of Algerian composer Khaled Amraoui). Missoum was working on a decisive renewal of the classic Algerian song and was looking for valid interpreters; he decided to propose to Saloua the song "Ellah youwlik sabr bi". The results will be more than satisfactory and from that moment on, the newborn singer abandoned the radio to devote herself entirely to music and singing.

Al Missoum will sign her greatest hits, the songs "Kif Rayi Hamelni", "Ma tahleflich" and "Lalla Amina" are milestones of the modern Algerian song. The track "Lalla Amina" will be in 1962 one of the three best-selling albums released by the record label Pathé Marconi.

In 1963, with a full-fledged career, the singer will participate in various radio shows, including "Hadi Darna" and "Warda el bi Chawk", and in 1964 she embarked on a long tour of the Arab countries that will consecrate her as the official ambassador of algerian song.

The death of Al Missoum in 1969 will hit her a lot and she will make a decisive change in her musical style by attempting in 1970 a raid in the Andalusian Arab style under the direction of Merzak Boudjemia, a young composer and director of the modern orchestra at the conservatory Algiers, who she will marry later.

With this operation Saloua will continue bravely a tradition inaugurated by Cheikha Yamna and Fadéla Dziria, undisputed queen of the musical genre called hawzi, moving on to an unexplored field, which contributes greatly to her musical growth and will make her one of the most esteemed performers of the song algerian.

Her musical career will be full of success and satisfaction and will be of interest to various fields. In 1982, she will perform in the company of actor Ahmed Ayadb (known as Rouiched's art name) in the movie "Hassen Taxi" by director Mohamed Slim Riadi, this will be her only film experience.

In 1990 she will be elected as a member of the National Council of Culture directed by the writer Abdelhamid ben Hadouga.

Left out of the music scene for almost fifteen years in 2005, she will be honored with the honors and she will be awarded by the title of queen of the song by Algerian Minister of Culture Khalida Toumi at the Timgad International Festival.

Reference point for various generations of artists Saloua will say on a tribute evening in recent years : "I've been in the arts world for 60 years, from the age of fourteen, it's great to see I'm not forgotten. I sang during a time when it was very difficult for a woman to do the singer because of the traditions. I broke all the taboos of time. I fought a fight with my parents. It was very difficult for me, but I never gave up and I ended up imposing myself. I would like to tell our youth to be serious, to work well, to be careful and to follow the right path to succeed. "

The Musical Heritage of Algeria : Teldja

Saadia Bakhouch known as Teldja is an Algerian singer born in Aïn Beïda
on June 12, 1953.

The main merit of this great singer is in contributing to renew and divulge a musical style known as Chaoui belonging to the culture of the Berber people with the same name.

The Chaouis (Amazigh: Icawiyen) are an ethnic group inhabiting the Aurès (Amazigh: ⴰⵡⵔⴰⵙ / Awras), a region located in the north east of Algeria, characterized by a rich history and by the mountain that gives the name to the region.

Teldja proposes a revision of the musical heritage of this region, sometimes reinterpreting it using a classically Arabic orchestration, which still arouses various criticisms by various members of the Algerian Berber community who have always considered arabization as absolute evil.

Very little is known about the biography of this artist whose art has been gradually forgotten.

It seems she have begun to sing at parties and weddings in the early '70s. In 1976 she performed in the city of Ouenza in the company of the folkloric band, generating great appreciation and starting a brilliant but brief career. She has never left her region of origin and has lived between the cities of Annaba and Tebessa, recording several songs among which the best known are: "Ya Salah", "Talaa netsawar" and "Tiri tiri ya teyyara ".

During her career she has collaborated with some of the best Algerian composers including: Rabah Driassa and Mohamed Boulifa.

In 1984 she was invited for an official performance in the city of Constantine, since then the news about her disappears.

Among his first hits are the songs "Hezze Ya Nawaem", a song written by Farid Al Atrash, and "Ya Salat Zein" track belonging to the musical tradition of the Easter

As an actor he appeared in various films including: "Mawal" (1966), "Malika al Hub" (1973), "Al Jaiza al Kubra" (1974) and "Mesk wa Anbar" (1973) which contains the fantastic scene of killer belly dance during his interpretation of the song "Hezze Ya Nawaem".

Rajji went to Jordan for a while during the Lebanese civil war and married a Jordanian woman Nawal Elias and had three children with her Layal,Rami and Sariya. He and his family also lived in Oman for a long period of time but then returned permantly to Lebanon in 1993 after the civil war.

Best known for his songs Lagetek (When I Met You...), and “Yawmain wa Shahrain” (Two Days and Two Months), Rajji’s special deep vocals also earned him roles in Lebanon’s top musicals and plays in the 1970s and 1980s with the Rahbani brothers, Sabah, Shoushou and Nabih Aboulhosn. Rajji was also an accomplished composer, and besides writing a great deal of his own music, he also wrote for Sabah ( the songs “Laylitna Saidi” and “ya Nas Dinyi Doulab”) and Samir Yazbek ( “Al-Oyoun Assoud” and “Dakhlak Berdan” )

During his career he collaborated with leading Lebanese authors including Philemon Wehbeh and Melhem Barakat. One of his latest collaborations was with the choreographer Caracalla for the musical "Belaylet Amar" (Moon Nights) performed at Casino Du Liban and Baalbek. His famous song "Laguitek" will be one of the first hits of singer Diana Haddad in 1996.

He died in 2001 of a stroke after having a brain seizure. Apparently, when once asked about how he felt about dying, Rajji replied, “I hate death because it would separate me from the people I love.
